Omniscient reader’s viewpoint

Webtoon: Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint : r/webtoon

So after I returned home from my computer AP (which was right after my Psych AP) I realized that I needed a break. I needed to rest, I needed some time to unwind and clear my head and rest my eyes.

Anyways, I forgot what I was saying…so over the next 24 hours I read the 106 chapters of the comic currently out. (New chapter comes weekly)

I guess this is a new record for me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
And I have no idea how I’m not blind yet…

In short, there is a typical nobody in the start called Kim Dokja who is the only reader of a particular novel. After he has finished 3000 chapters of “How to survive an apocalypse” he gets a message from the author. The author thanks him for being the only reader to have continued while everyone else had left before 100th chapter. The author then sends him a full copy of the novel. Then in typical shonen style, the entire world becomes the same novel he was reading (saw this coming miles away).

(Btw, if you’re lazy you can skip the next paragraph)

The dude now lives in the world from the Novel where there is a really handsome and overpowered MC (main character) who is a regressor (every time he dies, time resets, but he keeps his memories). This regressor is on his 3rd regression at the moment, and it would typically take him over a 1000 regressions to finally win after defeating otherworldly superpowers, who are called constellations, and these constellations all choose an “incarnation” which is like sponsoring a human and giving them their power and “coins” - which lets them upgrade their stats or buy new items. All these constellations are supposedly watching the “earthlings” for entertainment. Most of these constellations are based on history of different parts of the world. Now the comic’s MC (Kim Dokja) has to survive in this world and he tries to help the psychotic and clinically depressed regressor win.

If the previous paragraph didn’t make sense, no problemo. Basically the comic is based on the key theme - how would you go about life if you already knew what is going to happen. This happens in 2 ways - a regressor and an omniscient reader.
A regressor is like - if you could go back in time but still keep all your memories - how would you live life. I almost wrote a book about this once - “If life had a restart button”, then I realized that the idea isn’t as new and original as I thought it was. Literally everyone looks back and has things in their life they would’ve liked to change. But hey, the idea is still pretty cool.

An omniscient reader/listener/someone who see’s the future - is someone who knows what’s going to happen in the future, but their actions could change the future.
Now I’m really not gonna summarize the story, go check it out tho, I love the art style and I think its a good read. Back to the main theme here - how would you go about life if you knew what would happen. I think the story does a really good job of showing all aspects of this.

You’d definitely terrify people by knowing more than expected at every step of the way, this could potentially get your negative attention too. Someone could perceive you as a threat. While you might be overpowered and have unfair advantages at many points, you also run the risk of becoming arrogant and overconfident, taking your own mortality casually, only to screw up really badly and be left questioning - how could I have been so stupid. This happens with the main character who almost gets killed by the regressor (protagonist of the novel). It also makes you consider everything around you as less realistic, making you disconnected from the world. Sometimes just knowing isn’t enough either, you need to be able to do what is required, which can’t always bee done. Then knowing about the deaths of the one’s you love and even your own death could drive you mad. If you’re a regressor, then in fact you have to experience those deaths, that probably explains why the regressor in the story was just falling apart due to his trauma until he stops feeling emotion all together. Living life like a ticking time bomb knowing how you’re going to die isn’t a cool way to live.

In short, as fascinating as the idea seems…its better off the way it is. Knowing everything can also get boring, who doesn’t love suspense after all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My rating of the story - 8.75/10
Starts off slowly, a little dark, then picks up pace by around 10 chapters when the introduction’s boring but necessary parts are over. Then it’s pretty fun. It has its funny moments too which balance out the seriousness well so that you can read it without tiring yourself.
