Did I just read over 2 years of this comic in 3 days? Er….yeah…
Am I addicted? Probably…
Do I find it justifiable? Absolutely.
I’ve already finished 157 chapters of Solo Leveling and I love it. Enough to be writing about it, despite knowing that my friends are going to call me a weeb now. Funny thing here is that the comic isn’t even Japanese, it’s South Korean, but the trolling is inevitable.
[Oversimplified summary - this dude Sung Jin woo goes from the weakest hunter in the world to the strongest, and he’s awesome. Anything further would be spoiling it for all of you.]
(Apologies in advance to all of those who will be confused while reading this. If you read the comic, it will make more sense)
I’ve always had a problem with protagonists trying to befriend all their enemies and win them over to the ‘good side’, extremely prevalent in Naruto and Dragon Ball Z, prime examples being Vegeta and Saske, even Obito.
Like dude, I get it that you’re the hero here, the plot armor will protect you, but that guy killed your parents!! He was trying to kill you like 5 minutes ago!! How are you considering befriending him?!
(Btw, in the end, they really did end up ‘redeeming’ Obito…sigh)
But now I’ve finally found a protagonist who kills his enemies. Something I agree with far more. I personally believe that if it comes down to it, there’s no point hesitating and thinking about principles or morals, kill if you must, you’ve got to survive on your own. If you don’t kill, you’re going to get killed, there’s no plot armor in real life, nor is there a Minecraft style respawn button. It’s hardcore mode.
And you can’t go around forgiving people who’ve killed/hurt numerous others and don’t show any signs of changing their ways. If you’re in that stronger position, it’s your moral obligation to get rid of them so that they don’t harm anyone else. At the end of the day, it’s about survival. And if they have friends and family, you have them too. Don’t repeat Prithviraj Chauhan’s mistake.
Or how they put it in the comic -
(He goes on to kill the person, the art is epic)
This matches my own principles too - Avoid violence if possible, but if you’ve entered a fight…Don’t lose! No matter what! If you have to harm someone to protect yourself, do it.
Again I am not propagating violence here. I would still prefer talking something out, and I wouldn’t throw the first punch, but if the other person does, and I fancy my chances, I’m not running away. Of course, killing is extreme, but in general, this applies to trust as well. If you’ve lost my trust, good luck getting it back. And if luck is what you’re counting on, you’ll need a lot of it.
Even for the talking it out part, I’d like to make one more reference - even without context, it should make sense. You don’t negotiate or talk something out if the other person isn’t strong enough to make you worry about the damage you might suffer. Strength is crucial for survival.
There’s a quote I read on it which I liked - “forgive people who hurt you, but don’t forget their names”. Basically, don’t trust blindly, again. I am still of the belief that most people in the world are good and trustworthy, but I am not as sold on the concept of everyone becoming good. While people can change and become better over time, it’s safer to keep your guard up, even while giving them a second chance. (You’ll come across a Frieza for all you know)
Do I believe in 3rd chances though? Nope. 2 is all they’re getting.

I hope you like it too. See you in the next one.
